If I could bring back a canceled television series, it would be JAG. I loved that. I would also provide variety to m constant watching of NCIS reruns.

Absoutely He Was the Greatest Dad!

My father absolutely was the greatest Dad. He loved me. He cared for me. He provided a spiritual foundation for me. He challenged me to do my best. He played with me although I was his child of the second half of his adult life and it was harder to do so. He created wonderful memories for me.

He still every day makes me feel like I want to talk to him about the key challenges of life and ministry even though he departed this world 22 years ago!

I did marry a celebrity. I have always considered my wife a celebrity to me. After 37 years of marriage I have not changed my mind!

 

We Probably Would Serve Salmon

If your favorite celebrity were coming to your house for dinner, what would be the main course and why?

We would probably serve salmon cooked on the grill with orzo and asparagus. This is one of our favorite meals, is a healthy meal, and one we would love to share with our special guest.

Plug Ins Now Available at Church. Arrive Early to Get A Space

Some congregations have visitor/guest, and handicapped and/or senior adult parking places located close to the church building. Here in Canada where I am visiting this week the priority for parking is different. With winter temperatures way below zero, the high priority parking places closest to the building include waist high posts with electrical outlets so you can plug in the heater that keeps your engine block from freezing while you are at church.

Hmmmm! Could this also be a first step in plugging in electric cars while at church to get enough juice to get back home when you let the batteries run down too low because you forgot to plug it in the night before?

Can these plugs be offered on a priority basis to guests and seniors? What would the church sign at the street say--"Free Plug Ins Here for First Time Guests?"

The Weekend That Made Ministry Famous!

This past weekend was a great example of why I love what I do. Things were happening with my clients in various places around the country, but I could only be in one place. In many ways that was good as I seek to raise the capacity of my clients to address their own opportunities and challenges.

Spiritual Strategic Journey: I was with a smaller membership congregation going through a Spiritual Strategic Journey process. This was the weekend to help them move from the ideas they generated out of their 100 days of discernment in dialogue and prayer triplets to three identifiable scenarios for their future life and ministry. The process went very well and they seemed enthusiastic to move away from business as usual to grasp a challenging future.

Journalism is Not Dead . . .

. . . its delivery system and economic engine have just morphed into a different form in a galaxy far, far away.

Newspapers are going bankrupt. Magazines are hemorrhaging. Journalism is threatened. The Internet is exploding with new knowledge sharing. What is going on here?

Newspapers and magazines have forgotten what business they are in. The apparent decline of journalism is an unintended consequence.

Thoughts on the Arrival of My New Grandson

Today Brendan William Bullard was born at 1:03 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, SC outside of Charleston. He is my third grandchild, and the third child to my son, Jonathan, and his wife, Shannon. Unlike my first grandson, Nolan, who is six, and my only granddaughter, Elizabeth James, who is three, I was able to see, hold, and sing to Brendan within two hours of his birth. Distance prohibited this experience with the first two grandchildren.

As has become my custom, when I held Brendan for the first time today and he became fussy, I began singing to him “Jesus Loves Me”. I have made it a habit to sing this song when holding all three of my grandchildren as babies. I have wanted the sound of my voice, singing, and words about Jesus, love, and people to be part of the early hardwiring of their brain about life experiences and values. Often I have sung to them the words as “Jesus loves you”!

My oldest grandchild, Nolan, was the first to benefit from this practice. When he observed me singing to Brendan today, and it became his turn to hold his new brother under the watchful eye of parents and grandparents, he began singing “Jesus Loves Me” to his new brother. It was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. It is a song I hope Brendan will sing for all of his life.

I can’t wait to see Brendan again on Thursday when I will be able to hold and sing to him again! The whole world is new to Brendan. We are singing a song in a new land for him.
