Insight 031: Become a FaithSoaring Church By Walking by Faith Rather Than by Sight

FaithSoaring Churches 100CLR2 Corinthians 5:7 admonishes us to walk by faith rather than by sight. Isaiah 40:31 challenges us to mount up with wings as eagles and soar. Thus, walking by faith is FaithSoaring. One aspect of walking by faith is viewing congregations in terms of long-term potential rather than short-term urgencies. Another is always imagining the faint signals that are around the corner, over the next hill, or beyond the horizon.

Walking by faith focuses on Visionary Leadership and Relationship Experiences as unseen but most empowering. Walking by sight remains bounded by Programmatic Emphases and Accountable Management.

Insight 030: Become a FaithSoaring Church By Refocusing on Its Neighborhood or Community

FaithSoaring Churches 100CLRMany congregations lose touch with their community context. This does not happen suddenly. It is a gradual transition. The congregation is successful enough and comfortable enough that it does not sufficiently notice the geographical context slipping away from it.

Such congregations must rediscover their context. They must reposition themselves psychologically and strategically as a new congregation in their context. They must imagine they have a core group who are seeking to establish themselves as a new missional movement. They must focus on the spiritual and strategic actions to connect with the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of their context.

Insight 029: Become a FaithSoaring Church By Becoming a Church@50+

FaithSoaring Churches 100CLRIt is a common fantasy for many congregations that they need to reach young families with children. However, there is a demographic of congregations whose chances are slim and none at being successful. These are congregations where less than 20 percent of the active adults are less than 50 years old,

These congregations should consider becoming a Church@50+ that intentionally focuses on households headed by adults age 50 or more. These empty nest and senior adult households have a unique collection of life stage needs and leadership resources to contribute to a continually renewing vital and vibrant congregation.

Insight 028: Become a FaithSoaring Church By Relocating to a More Promising Location

FaithSoaring Churches 100CLRThe location of a congregation can create tremendous barriers to vitality. This occurs when the land uses around the facilities change from residential to commercial or industrial. This can also occur when the demographics of the context changes faster than the congregation can adapt. Unfortunately there are also times the congregation chooses not to adapt to the new demographic realities.

Relocation, while not always the ideal, may be one way to initiate the transformation of a congregation. The key is for the congregation to have a clear and passion understanding of God’s vision for ministry in the new location.

Insight 027: Become a FaithSoaring Church By Merging Three Congregations

FaithSoaring Churches 100CLRHistorically the merger of one congregation with another has occurred out of weakness. Its purpose has been to create a merged congregation to live longer than the two might have.  Many congregations continued their decline until within five years they were the size of the larger of the two at the time of merger.

In recent years new more proactive models of merger have arisen that have been more successful. Among the factors of success is the creation a new culture united around an empowering vision. This is more likely when the merger is of three congregations rather than two.
