Today in the early worship service at my church of membership we had a baby dedication. Not unusual. What was unusual was the mention by the pastor that this baby girl represents the fourth generation of that family in our church. It turns out the baby girl has an almost three-year-old brother who truly symbolizes the beginning of a fourth generation in our church.
Perhaps unusual is that our church is only 30 years old and already has four generations in it. This extended family actually connected with our church when it was three years old, and the older brother is almost three years old, so—doing the math—it only took 24 years for our church to become a four generation church from the time this extended family connected with us.
Going deeper, this family already had one grandchild when they connected so our church has been a three generation church since its third year. While not from the same extended family, it is safe to say that our congregation has probably had people who represented three different birth generations—builders, boomers, and busters—since almost its first year.
