Alex McManus spoke last week to a group of pastors in the Lake Hickory Learning Communities' Sustaining Pastoral Excellence process at Hollifield Leadership Center at www.Hollifield.org.
Among the quotes from Alex include that "mobilization is the new assimilation."
My understanding and interpretation of that statement is that mobilizing people in the work of the kingdom of God, particularly outside the four walls of the church, is the best way to assimilate them into the body life of a local congregation.
One participant in the dialogue suggested Alex was missional before missional was cool. The suggestion was made that the institutional church can kill the missional drive within us. There is actually no community without mission, in the opinion of McManus.
Alex, who converted to the Christian faith at age 21, suggests that although he was saved from evil in becoming a Christian, that it is in the institutional church that he has found some of the greatest evil. For example, the church is the place where he has experienced the deepest racism.
